Magi-Nation is a great online game that is in open beta phase of development. It is based on the TV program Magi-Nation that airs on saturdays at Kids CBC (Canada) or Kids WB (USA). We decided to to a quick overview of the game based on our own gameplay.
The game begins (ofcourse) with character creation. You can chose any one of four races and you can play either male or female. There is not much customization that you can do with your character at this point. This might change once the game comes out of beta and launches. You can adjust your skin tone or pick any one of four hairstyles that are in specific colors. Once you create your character you need to pick a server, of which there are many.
You will enter the Moonlands world in Orwin's study. Orwin is the first NPC that you will meet and he tells you a few things you need to know and sends you on your way through a shimmering doorway to begin your first quest with Mortash. She explains a bit about the creatures of the Moonlands both the good and the evil Shadow Magi. You will need to collect animite stones to place in dream creatures that you then use as part of your team to help you complete quests throughout the Moonlands. She sends you off for some training and then you are on your own!
Once you actually complete your first quest for Orwin, he will open the portal for you and send you into the Moonlands world! You click on the portal and there will be four world choices: The Sky Islands, The Great Forest, Coral Canyons, and Mushroom Jungle. Each of these worlds must be completed in order to move to the next one. You will begin with the Sky Islands and work your way around from there.
You will gain experience points as you battle each monster and they will accumulate in your status bar. Once you have gained the right number of exp. points you can level up. You will also be able to level up your dream creatures. At every third level, your dream creature will gain a new power. This is important because your dream creatures become part of your team and they all help you to defeat your enemies! The level cap is set at 30. We do not know yet if this will be higher once the game launches.
Battles are turn based, which means you get a turn, then your enemy gets a turn, an each of your dream creatures will also get a turn to attack. Everyone goes one at a time. No one can take their turn until their time bar is full.
There is a small 'town' with only one shop in the starting forest area. You can purchase all kinds of thing from the shopkeep. There are relics, which can be used multiple times, or artifacts, which have only one use. You will begin with a bag that can hold 24 items. You can buy more bags with different slot numbers to hold more if you need.
At level 10, you gain access to the Plaver vs Player aspect of Magi-Nation. You will gain entry to Naroom's Arena where you can battle other players! You will need to register with Ranger Dex and off to battle it is! We will post more on this aspect of the game in the future!
Overall the graphics are fun. They are fantasy-based and whimsical. The music is sweet and you have the ability to turn it off if you don't like it. It is a fun little game if you just want to log in and play a few simple quests without having to spend hours playing. Or, if you want to explore all of Moonlands and spend time questing...you can do that too!
