Dofus was started in September, 2005 by the Ankama Corporation. Dofus has a turn-based battle system and supports PvP and PvM. In fact one of the very first quests that you receive in Dofus is to defeat a fellow player.

Dofus attracts mostly teenagers or young adults, but the atmosphere is interesting and has humor in it that makes it so that people of all ages can play. Dofus was created with humor in mind, and includes humor that Ankama equates to what you would find in Shrek, or by writer Terry Pratchet.

Your child will be able to play alone, but there is a strong group element to this game, so they will be interacting with other players as they explore the lands. There are guilds in Dofus as well.

The violence in Dofus is light, with no real blood shed. Marriage is a part of Dofus. Being married allows those two characters to teleport to each other within a reasonable distance.

Dofus has an open chat system in place. The time that I spent in Dofus, the community seemed fairly kind and I didn’t see any inappropriate text floating around on my screen.

For example, I stepped away from my computer while logged on the other day. One of the first quests, as I’ve mentioned above, requires one player to engage another in a battle. Well, I must have been asked to fight a few times, but the harshest thing I saw on my screen when I returned, was that I had been called rude. Players are encouraged to report other players that make insulting remarks.

There are moderators within Dofus. Moderators consist of volunteer players. Those that do not follow the rules in Dofus do get sanctioned. Ankama is trying hard to keep Dofus a fun and friendly place for people of all ages. From what I could tell from my experience so far in the game, it’s working.
