Have you noticed lately that there seems to be a new online game being released in what feels like every moment? As I was perusing through my daily news sweep, I came across some information about some new games that Nickelodeon plans on releasing. At the bottom of this article it listed that they have 3,000 online games now, and plan to release another 1,500 in the upcoming year. Does anyone besides me think this is a lot?
First let me say, I began playing video games when I was about 9 years old (I am far older than that now…but a woman never tells!) on a 13” black and white TV. It began with Pong and Breakout and I have never looked back! I am an avid gamer and play them in all forms! In the beginning, games seemed to come out systematically and timely. There were months where you would wait for the next game to come out. There was really only one ‘new’ console system out at a time so you could really get into every ‘nook-and-cranny’ of the games you had for it. You had lots of time to play them over and over again before the next best thing came out.
These days, games seem to be coming out at alarming speeds that it is nearly impossible to keep up! I have found myself playing a game so fast, skipping parts, just so that I can finish and hurry up to play the next one! What happened to simply enjoying a good, long, hard, video game…exploring under every rock and behind every tree?
The video game industry is growing at an exponential rate. I wonder what the saturation point will be? Will it be by next year? In five years? How many Massive Multiplayer Online Games can there be? I realize there are billions of people on this planet, but how many of them are gamers? Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE video games passionately, but I don’t know which one to play next! I want to play them all…but there just aren’t enough hours in a day!
